What do I have to do to become a certified law enforcement officer?

In order to attend the Ms Law Enforcement Officers` Training Academy (MLEOTA) you must meet the eligibility requirements set forth by the Board on Law Enforcement Standards and Training (BLEOST). You no longer have to be employed by any law enforcement agency. Any candidate who meets the eligibility requirements may pay their own tuition cost to attend MLEOTA. You are required to attend a ten (10) week entry level course and upon successful completion you are eligible to move into the job market in the field of law enforcement anywhere in the State of Ms. Your certification will be complete when you are hired by either a city, county or state agency. The Ms Highway Patrol training program is a different training program altogether and applications must be submitted through the Ms Highway Patrol. Do I have to be employed with a department to attend the Mississippi Law Enforcement Officers Training Academy?

You do not have to be employed with any law enforcement agency for Basic class attendance at MLEOTA. You must be 21 years of age with at least a high school diploma or its equivalence. You must be of good moral character and no criminal history. You must also be able to show proof of medical insurance coverage during the duration of the ten (10) week training process. All self sponsored recruits must have their own firearm and mode of transportation for firearms training and the driving courses (does not have to be a police cruiser).
