Each year, the OHS submits to a regional office of the U.S. Department of Transportation a document describing how federal monies will be used in Mississippi. This Highway Safety Benchmark Report is carefully reviewed by regional and national experts who analyze our proposed activities for compliance with the 1966 National Highway Safety Act and other national goals. Once the document is approved, the state may begin funding highway safety projects. The OHS monitors the progress of each project. Project directors submit periodic reports to the OHS and advise the OHS of their major accomplishments and progress in achieving the stated goals of the program.

The OHS keeps abreast of current activities and concerns of the federal government through a regional National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) office in National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Region 6, Fort Worth, Texas, and a divisional Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) office in Jackson, Mississippi. Information regarding these new directives and initiatives are shared with local interest groups and agencies.
